A Chandelier light: when should you super size it?
In this article on chandelier lights is to help anyone who may not be as well informed about chandeliers and what they are able to figure it out . It is important to know a little bit more about them before you just go install one in your home. The majority of the time when someone thinks of a chandelier light in their home they are thinking about needing to light a room, entryway or a dining room table. This is exactly what a chandelier was made for but, what most people don’t see is all the other uses they have and the effects of not just how much light we have in a room, but the actual feel of a room.
Starting with the primary information on chandeliers, they come in a large number of sizes, shades, glass style, colors and styles to fit any room. When you buy a chandelier, you want to remember the different aspects of a chandelier so that you not only get the correct size and color, but you provide enough light for a room and match the correct style of your décor. Take a minute and go through sizing in this first section and see if it can’t give you some good ideas on how much light, and where the chandelier should go.
Here are 4 guide lines to help you select a size of chandelier for over your dining room table:
1. Don’t use a chandelier that is too big for your table. What ever you do, don’t get a light that is too large for your table. You want to make sure that there is at least 8” to 12” of spacing between the outside of the chandelier to the outside of the table this will allow it to be centered over and in the table correctly. If you try to get too big with this it will make the table look small.
2. Height off the top of the table is always important since if you hang a chandelier too low near to your table you won’t be able to see anyone across from you and will make it difficult to hold a conversation. You want to make sure that it hangs anywhere from 24” to 36” off the top of the table. That can be adjusted to your preference and also may change on what size of chandelier you have but the general guideline is 24” to 36” off the top.
3. Make sure also when hanging the chandelier that if you have a standard 8’ ceiling you don’t buy a chandelier that has to much length. For example: If you bought a chandelier that is 36” tall and you have a 40” tall table, on a 8’ tall ceiling this will leave you about 1’ 7” of height between just the bottom of the chandelier and the top of the table. In that scenario you would be way too cramped and would definitely want go a size down on the chandelier.
4. You always need to take in to account that when you see the height in a catalog for a fixture it does not include any amount for the chain, rods or canopy. Basically if you have a 36” tall chandelier that is going from the bottom to the top of the chandelier. For the minimum height if it is hung by chain you can use 1 link of chain and the canopy which depending on the chain will be 2” to 3” extra that you will need to add to the height of your chandelier.
