Deltona Wins Parramatta Cup
Saturday, 20 February 2010: Kevin Moses-trained Deltona has led all of the way to win the Listed Parramatta Cup (2000m) at Rosehill today adding to the exceptional week of jockey and new father Tim Clark.
Deltona went into the race off a narrow defeat at the hands of Wayne Wilkes-trained Tagus at Rosehill on February 6 over 1800m.
While Tagus was searching for a third straight win, Deltona met the Patinack Farm/Gerry Harvey-owned gelding a kilo better off at the weights.
Urged straight to the lead by jockey Tim Clark, Deltona fended off challenges in the straight to claim his first win in Listed company. Last start nemesis Tagus finished sixth.
“We got to the front nice and easy,” Clark said. “We didn’t want to go too slow on him so we rolled along and gave a nice little kick up the running, he was too good for them.”
The Listed victory for Clark comes in the same week he and his partner Jade celebrated the birth of daughter Ellie-Grace.
“It’s been a terrific week,” Clark said. “My feet still haven’t touched the ground, I’m over the moon and couldn’t be happier.”
Today’s Parramatta Cup winner Deltona is racing consistently for trainer Kevin Moses, now with two wins and a minor placing from his past three starts.
“He tries very hard,” trainer Kevin Moses said.
“He’s a big strong horse. He’s fit and well so we’ll just keep poking along with him.”
The honest galloper continued his love affair over the journey today, his victory in the Parramatta Cup takes his record to six wins and six minor placings from 14 starts between 1800m to 2200m.
The gelding by Commands now has earnings over $330,000 with seven wins and 15 minor placings from his 36 career starts.
In other runs out of the Parramatta Cup, favourite La Belle Chataigne finished second while Chris Waller-trained Voice Coach put in an improved performance to finish fifth.
The imported galloper had disappointed earlier in his first two starts this preparation, having finished last in both runs.
Chris Waller suggested prior to today’s run the paddock would be the next port of call for Voice Coach if he failed to improve in today’s Parramatta Cup.
