Laith’s call gets council attention
WITHIN days of an 11-year-old boy calling for clean streets, Parramatta Council has announced heavy fines for people caught dumping rubbish on footpaths.
Laith Jammal spoke out about household rubbish being dumped in his street, Virginia St, Rosehill, in last week’s Advertiser.
The feisty boy said he was ashamed by all the rubbish and discarded furniture in his street when he invited his friends to his 11th birthday party.
He called on council to clean up his and other streets where rubbish was piling up.
Last week council admitted it was difficult to keep up with the problem, which was particularly bad in Rosehill, Westmead and Harris Park.
This week council has announced a tough stance with fines ranging from $433 for individuals to $1500 for corporations.
“Residents and body corporations who are suspected of illegally dumping rubbish in public spaces will now be issued a clean-up notice and have to pay $433,’’ Lord Mayor Paul Garrard said.
“If they fail to comply with the notice, an on-the-spot fine of $750 for individuals and $1500 for corporations will be imposed.
“Council’s community safety officers will target these and other areas throughout the Parramatta area in coming weeks and residents found guilty of improper rubbish disposal offences will be fined.’’
