The man, an actor who has schizophrenia, had pulled out a small knife and threatened self-harm as police closed in on him in bushland northwest of Sydney yesterday.
A 37-year-old woman, and her 68-year-old dad, were murdered at a house in Randwick on November 9.
The suspect was last night charged with two counts of murder and one count of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow. The 42-year-old had eluded police until yesterday, when he was spotted at a service station at Colo Heights, on Sydney’s northwestern fringe. Colo Heights service station owner Claus Mahlenhoff and his wife, Sue, recognised the man from footage shown on television.
The man is thought to have arrived in Colo Heights on Tuesday by taxi and had been sleeping in bushland since then.
The acting commander of the homicide squad, Superintendent Dennis Bray, said the suspect was located nearby by police about two hours later. “Following a short pursuit, the man stopped, produced a small knife and threatened self-harm,” he said.
Police negotiated with the man and he was arrested at 1.30pm. Police said he was “lucid and co-operative”.
