Opposition puts axe through 9000 jobs, $1.4 billion project in Parramatta

NSW Treasurer Eric Roozendaal today called on Opposition leader Barry O’Farrell to reverse the decision to block laws to generate 9000 jobs at Parramatta.

Opposition puts axe through 9000 jobs, $1.4 billion project in Parramatta

The NSW Coalition today voted against the Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Amendment Bill 2009, which would have helped create 9,000 construction and on-going jobs at the proposed Parramatta Civic Place development.

The laws will now go to the Upper House, where the Opposition holds the balance of power. To secure and support the 9000 jobs, the NSW Opposition will need to vote with the Government in the Upper House. “During these tough economic times, the Opposition must support this project and stand with the NSW Government to create and support jobs,” Mr Roozendaal said.

Mr Roozendaal today issued a direct challenge to Mr O’Farrell. ” Barry O’Farrell must instruct the Opposition to vote for the 9000 jobs when it is debated in the Upper House – and ensure the passage of the laws,” Mr Roozendaal said.

Yesterday, the NSW Government delivered a fiscally responsible Budget focused on jobs and infrastructure. “When we are supporting up 160,000 jobs a year, the Opposition must explain why they have put the axe to 9,000 jobs in Parramatta,” Mr Roozendaal said.

“The Opposition is being reckless with the State economy – and must be held to account.” The proposal for the Parramatta Civic Place Master Plan includes: • 65,000m² commercial office space; • 35,000m² new retail space planned to enhance the shopping experience available within Parramatta CBD and fill gaps identified in the current retail mix; • 6000m² of community space, including a new central library, council offices and other community facilities; and • up to 800 residential dwellings.
