Parramatta to host Mother’s Day Classic event

Parramatta City Council will again support the Mother’s Day Classic, to be held on Sunday 9 May, to help raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research programs.

Mother's Day ClassicThe Mother’s Day Classic is Australia’s largest charity walk/run event and aims to increase awareness of breast cancer in the community.

Parramatta is one of 10 cities across Australia that will hold an event and participants can choose to run or walk either a 4km or 8km route. A further 25 regional locations will also host events.

The Parramatta event will take place in Parramatta Park from 7.30am and you can register to participate online at www.mothersdayclassic.org.

“I am delighted to support this charity which has already done so much towards the improved detection and treatment of breast cancer,” said Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr Paul Garrard.

“Last year almost 4000 people participated in the local event and I would hope we can improve on that number this year,” he said. “Whether you choose to walk, run, volunteer or just join in the family entertainment it is both an enjoyable and worthwhile way to spend Mother’s Day morning.”

Cr Garrard attended the national launch of this year’s event, which was hosted by its patron, the Governor-General Quentin Bryce AC. Parramatta City Council has assisted this year’s event with local promotional support and, in October last year, raised $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation through a month-long fundraising effort led by the Lady Mayoress of Parramatta, Karen Garrard.

More than 90,000 people nationally are expected to join a walk or run this year and thousands of participants will choose to wear tribute cards dedicated to loved ones affected by breast cancer.

The Mother’s Day Classic is organised by Women in Super, a group that provides educational and networking opportunities for women in the superannuation and finance industries. Since the first walk in Melbourne and Sydney in 1998, the event has raised $5.7 million for breast cancer research.

The major sponsor is ME Bank who has sponsored the Mother’s Day Classic since 2005.
