School is a rules nursery
AUSSIE Rules officials might want to look at Merrylands Public if they are serious about finding talent in Sydney’s west.
The school’s junior Aussie Rules team won the PSSA competition with an undefeated record.
That culminated in the final against Parramatta West on Friday at Merrylands Oval, which the home team claimed 40-6.
Manager and teacher Paul Douglas said no one in his team played the game on weekends, but they benefited from the school’s sports education.
“We do heaps of skill work at school,’’ he said.
“We do lots of PE and development sessions, so they’ve all got natural ability that they’ve shown in other sports.
“They’ve got that ability to know where they should be, a sense of positional play.’’
Douglas named Christian Pasitoa as one of the best players on the team, and praised Celine Fatu and Belinda Walsh for their participation.
They were all enthusiastic in handpassing, kicking and grabbing their opponents throughout the competition.
The modified PSSA game was contested between mixed teams over three 10-minute periods.
Teams of 12 players were divided into defenders, midfielders and attackers, with each group restricted to a part of the field to encourage participation.
* In the senior final, Parramatta West beat Ringrose Public 36-13.
