Parramatta Council is hoping its new “wayfinding” system will allow people to peek into the area’s rich history.

To be called Walk Parramatta, the system will provide visitors on foot with an easy guide through interesting spots around the city and surrounds.

Details of the system are still under wraps and will be revealed in coming weeks exclusively in the Advertiser.

Lord Mayor Paul Garrard said Walk Parramatta would not only make it easier for pedestrians to navigate the city by foot but would provide a guide on how to discover the city’s gems.

“Once seen as a country retreat by early governors, the city of Parramatta has grown to become a dynamic city with a thriving business and cultural scene,” Cr Garrard said.

“Its heritage past sits comfortably with its vibrant contemporary setting and in between; there is plenty for the walking enthusiast to discover.

“From the Riverfront to Church Street Mall, Old Government House and beyond, Parramatta is a city where its laneways and byways, its many precincts and parklands, all have myriad stories to tell.”

The new “wayfinding” approach is based on the theory of “mental mapping”, giving people the information and landmark prompts they need to encourage and develop the natural mental mapping process, Cr Garrard said.
